  • Is it worth me going to The National Archives On Monday?

I have an aoopointment with a specialist in a London hospital on Monday and normally all they do is give me a pep talk and say there's not much they can do so was wondering if it might be worth me visiting the National Archives and make a day of it? Is there something there that could help m? So far I have started researching only my maternal grandfather's side of the family and am stuck on my gg grandfather who was born in London and served in the Navy...also not sure if I found the right military record for him so was wondering if it's worth me popping in while I'm up there. What do you think? Want to do somethng up there at least besides being told to come back to London six months for another pep talk.

I doubt if the London hospital is near Kew, so you might find it takes a bit of time to get there.

But I think Kew is worth it, just for the experience. Have you got a reader;s card? You need to pre-register if not.

If you have time to spare go and look around. Then you have 6 months to work out what you do want to research next time.

depends which hospital it is. There is a large hospital in Fulham Road about 30/40 minutes drive from Kew.

don't worry about the hospital I've got that all figured out I was wondering if it was worth me visiting Kew to get further in my research based on what information I have that I've told you about. I don't know what a reader's card is though.

Have a look at TNA's website. It explains about readers' cards and what ID you need and may also give you an idea of what you might look at when you get there:

I went for the first time a few weeks ago...just go to the website now and pre-register (basic name/address info) then tomorrow take 2 forms of ID along (I used a debit card and a utility bill) and they'll give you a reader's card.

A warning -they take a photo for the card while you are sat at the desk talking to them - I didn't even realise theyd taken it until they handed me my card depicting a wild haired mad thing bearing (I hope) very little relationship to me

Oh god...thans fir that warning...I'm not photogenic. Would they mind if I went with a brown paper bag over my head with eye holes in? I mean as long as I kep it on all day and it looks like the pic there sholdn't be a problem right? But seriously...it's worth going then?

Only YOU can decide that. But yes I do. You can view the 1911 census for free, though you need to get a ticket from the lobby first.

You can use the library and just get orientated for other visits. You can enjoy the bookshop.

It's impossible to sum it up, just check out the website for what there is, order your reader's ticket in advance to save time and you can also order up to 3 documents to view before you turn up. When you get there you can order another 3 etc.

How long is a piece of string? I could probably live there for 6 months researching my family and not have done.

I'm hang second thoughts now, unless I get up at the crack of dawn (which quite frankly I don't feel like doing) I'm only going to have about two hours there...including lunch...will that be enough do you think? Although it is only the military record I want to get sorted for now.

i have never been to kew but i have only just starting visting record offices and i either need a break after a few hours or do something stuipd like saying i have lost my locker have every one seach for it and find it in my pocket so have to run away

so i would say a few hours is worth it
just to get the feel of the place and ask a few questions
happy hunting and go for it

Two hours is plenty to get familiarised and look at a record.
