  • I've hit a brick wall

Ann Ansell is my husbands great great grandmother.

When she was sent out to Tasmania she maaried James Boon (also a convict)

My problem is when I found her records I am now unsure if Ansell was her name.

Was it Landell......was the man she lived with in Englands name Landell.

    Were they married?

I have been unable to go back any further.

I have ordered their marriage certificate (Ann Ansell and James Boon)..but don't holdout much hope of getting any more information from that.

Here is the link to her records and you can see why I am confused.

I would agree it is Sandell - not Landell.

        I read it as

" Lived with a man named Thos Ansell, at Gloster a hawker. Real name SANDELL"

doesnt say they were married though.

        hope it helps

Was that common for men to take the womens name?

usually if there was a big inheritance. james duke of monmouth was the illeg son of charles II. married anne scott, duchess of buccleugh and took her name.
so it happens, just not common.

what makes you think he took her name? i just think they sound similar.

I think what it means is Thomas's real name was Sandell, but he called himself Ansell, and Ann took the name Ansell because she lived with him as though they were married (but weren't).

That is what I thought too.....that Ansell is probably neither of their real surnames.

I guess that will remain a mystery.

                    Thank you for your help.
