          Trooper is the equivalent of a Private.

          Some Regiments have different names

          Sapper
          Trooper
          Gunner
          Bombadier (not sure if that's not a lance corporal)

          Can't think which Regiment uses Trooper at the minute - Perhaps Household Calvary.

            A trooper is/was of course a mounted soldier, both Boer wars had lots of mounted soldiers because of the terrain they fought on, and the distances they covered.......
