  • Occupation Help please

Horatio Merryweather b1872 is on the 1891 census with his parents and siblings at 2 Armitage Street, Ordsall, Salford.

His brother Thomas is a White Smith and his father, Horatio, is a Grocer.

Horatio junior's occupation looks like Striker Smith.

Has anyone ever heard of this or could it be something else?

    Any advice welcome.

    Thanks
    Lynne

Searching for Ford, Duffy, (Manchester and Ireland) Cree (Manchester, Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire), Owen (Manchester), Humphreys (Manchester and Ireland), Egerton (Manchester and Cheshire), Cresswell (Manchester).

I think his occupation looks like striker and the enumerator has written "smith" to clarify.

        Smith's Striker
A blacksmith who wielded a hammer whilst another blacksmith held the work-piece with tongs in the right position on the anvil

Thanks everyone, I wasn't sure I was reading it correctly.

The odd thing is Horatio senior was a Whitesmith in 1881 then became a Grocer in 1891 and in 1901 he is a Blacksmith (Garden Rails). Horatio junior is a Blacks - do - which I assume means Blacksmith.
