Hi everyone

I have just discovered on the 1911 Census that my great grandfather was in prison at that time. Does anyone know if there is a way to find out why, how long for, etc? It was HMP St. Albans.

You need to look at the St Albans prison register which is probably in Hertfordshire Archives & Local Studies (HALS)

You could try seeing if there's anything on The Times online archive, or if you know where he was 1901, seeing if there's anything in the local paper there.
