  • Caley family again :)

Just going through and I have found my Great Grandfather William Caley who
was born 23rd Nov 1875, I have a birth cert to prove this and his
brother Arthur who was born in March 1875, have no birth cert, there is an
entry in freebmd. I know the census of 1881 shows arthur aged 6 born in 1875 and William 5 born in 1876.

My question is, did they register william and Arthur's births a year after
    they were offically born ?

You say that William was born 23 nov 1875 - and appears on the 1881 census as being aged 5 - this is correct. When the census was taken on 3rd April 1881 he would have been 5 years of age, not reaching his 6th birthday until the November of 1881.

You have to remember that it is impossible to show the exact year of birth in the census if you don't know the actual date of birth. Someone shown as being aged 5 on the 1881 census would have been born between 4th April 1875 and 3rd April 1876.

If Arthur is shown as being aged 6 on the 1881 census then you would expect his date of birth to be between 4th April 1874 and 3 April 1875.
