  • born at sea

i have an ancestor who was born at sea. his name was adolph herman carl gebert. he was born in 1844, to johann adoplh bernhard gebert and maria catherine elise wendelborn.

his family travelled to new zealand from germany on the 'skjold'.
once in new zealand, the colony they were founding didn't work, and a german minister in south australia sent a ship 'palmyra', to pick up these german settlers and bring them to south australia.

is there a way to find some birth record?

You could try NZ (another thread here has the link as does Wiki) or Australia. OH's g grandfather was born on the way to Australia in 1853 and he's registered in NSW.

thanx libby. i did search for gebert births in new zealand, but didn't find any.
maybe the ships passenger list might have a note in it.
