Where and when was he convicted?
A William Potter was convicted at York Special Assizes on 28/11/1844, and transported to Van Dieman's Land (Tasmania) on 13/5/1845 on a ship called the David Malcolm. The passenger list says in the "Sentence" column: "Life - commutation". Sounds as though it could be your man.

Tasmania has excellent convict records. If you click on "conduct record", you can read his record online.

I was able to read words actually spoken by my great x 3 grandparents because they gave evidence at the trial of their son, my gt x 3 uncle. If he hadn;t been simple and mentally ill I would never have had that privilege.~ with love from Little Nell~Chowns, Dunt, Emms, Mealing, Purvey & Smoothy
