  • Heathcote/Starkie

I am trying to find any info on the Heathcote(James.W) and Starkie(Ralph) families. Both lived mainly in Leigh/Lancashire,but JWH started life in Farnworth. Mainly interested pre 1901, any info gratefully received.

    Welcome to FTF.

The way it works best is if you tell us what you definitely know, and what you are hoping to find out. And one question per thread is also helpful so the answers (and the helpers!) don't get too confused. So, working back from what you definitely know, what's the first thing you want to know?

And finally, answers usually come thick and fast, so it's best if you stick around!

Do you have a subscription to Ancestry? If not, it'd be worth your while to take out the 14-day free trial so you can go further.

Yes, at the moment I think it's your best bet.

FindmyPast also has a lot of stuff, but it doesn't have all the censuses yet.

You can start with the free trial on Ancestry; they ask for your credit card information, but if you cancel before the 14 days are up, you don't get charged. However, you may find you get hooked At present, the Australian sub (UK Heritage) is slightly cheaper than the English one, and contains more or less the same databases.

I just posted some very brief information about each census, but if you join Ancestry you'll be able to see the census image for each person, with the full details (age, place of birth, occupation, etc.). The references I gave you are the Ancestry references.

The 1911 census isn't on Ancestry, and won't be for the foreseeable future. At present it's pay-per-view, and quite expensive, but eventually it'll be available on subscription from FindMyPast.

Appreciate your advice but , as a pensioner, I find the price a bit steep. I think I will have to start with a pay-as-you-go scheme, at least to start with

Some libraries esp the bigger ones have Ancestry, might be worthwhile finding out if its available near you.

And Ancestry Library Edition has access to many more databases than a UK Ancestry subscription.
