Where does he live? Does he live in a mining area? Where he lives may help you decide if it is Miner or Monger.

Another vote for Miner (subject to Janet's caveat).

I don't think it does say Miner. There's a big pen flourish in that word on the 3rd or 4th letter. Or is it a correction?

As Janet said what area was he living in.

Can you give us the ref so we can look at it.

If its Billingsgate then I would go for monger as no mines around Billingsgate and most definitely a fish market in fact The Fishmarket!

I thought it said Billingsgate but I thought that too easy mainly because I thought everyone knew that Billingsgate was the old fish market along the thames between London and Tower Bridge!

                  So I discounted that.

I'd still like the ref or the area or can Britec confirm that its Billingsgate! I'm not sure they would use the term Billingsgate on a census!

                      RG10/3866 Folio: 182 P79

                      St Helen's Lancs.

Definitely miner imo - looking at the one above.

                          Here's the ref:

                          RG10; Piece: 3866; Folio: 182; Page: 79

There's a miner just up the page from him for comparison.

Hmmm...I can't see a likely marriage, nor registrations for any of the children b 1869-1881 either.

I was wondering if the firstborn, Mary, was perhaps not originally a Wild*? I can't see her in 1871. Do you know what happened to William after 1881? I see Margaret said she was married in 1891 and a widow in 1901.
