  • lost birth record

I am researching my grandmothers family. I have been unable to find any record of her birth on 29/9/1902. As she was supposed to be a Londoner I thought it would be easy to find. Both her parents were deaf and her Mum was unable to speak as well and probably illiterate. How do I go about looking for a birth certificate in these circumstances? Any advice.

If that date of birth is correct, she will be registered in the last quarter of the year, 1902
    What is her name?

      Welcome to Family Tree Forum

29th Sept is my birthday too! (not 1902 though :()

If you can give us her name and anything else you know about her or her parents (do you know her dad's name from her marriage cert?) we may be able to help.

Hi terebrow & welcome to FTF.

Can you give us your grandmother's name so we can have a look for you? There might be a reason why you can't find it, it may have been mispelt or perhaps she was born in London but in a different district to what you thought?

my Nan was called Louisa Sharp born 29/9/1902. She married Leonard Copeland 8/8/1922. Her parents were Charles and Charlotte Sharp. The only record I could find was for Louie Sharp born in Lincoln at this time.

              Could this be her?

              Births Dec 1902
              Sharpe Louisa Westhampnett 2b 352

You had six weeks to register a birth and she was born just a couple of days before the end of the previous quarter.

Do you know whereabouts she was likely to have been born?

I'm just looking at the 1911 census..........

I've found a Charles Sharp and his wife on the 1901 census - both of them say Deaf and dumb from childhood in the disabilities column, but the wife is Mary A not Charlotte.

I've found a Louisa and a Charles both the right age together in 1911. I'm just trying to work out who his wife is in 1911 (it's a big family!)

Wife is still Mary Ann in 1911 - same birth year as Mrs Sharp gave in 1901.

I think this is the parents marriage:

                              Marriages Sep 1891
                              Carr Mary Ann W. Ham 4a 291 <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
                              Curle John Henry W. Ham 4a 291
                              Newson Ada Elizabeth W.Ham 4a 291
                              Sharpe Charles W. Ham 4a 291 <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

as on the 1891 census Mary A Carr's record also says deaf and dumb.

It looks like its the usual story of nobody uses their birth name and we always thought it was spelt Sharp! Thank you for your help.
