  • Unknown Devon placename - Bundey

In 1851 my Nunn family are in Stoke Fleming, Devon.
    Class: HO107; Piece: 1875; Folio: 65; Page: 19
The last entry is Mary Nunn, mother, 83, parish relief born Devon, Bundey.

The writing looks perfectly clear to me but Bundey doesn't seem to exist. Any ideas please?

I don't know, but if you take the name out of the search and put Devon Bun* as place of birth, there are quite a few places that appear that could possibly be made to be spelled Bundey (or Bundry, which it also could be, looking at the script)

        Does this Genuki page help:

        GENUKI/Devon: Devon Towns and Parishes

        # Bundley - see Bondleigh
        # Bunley - see Bondleigh

I'll have a look at Google maps.

Bondleigh is just north of Okehampton and Dartmoor, Uncle John. It looks likely.

Bondleigh it is (or rather, was!)

See this from Samuel Hall's map of Devon in the 1830s (near the figure 9, top right):

According to Robert Nunn's bap. in Stoke Fleming in April 1805 (IGI Batch C052431), his parents were Robert Nunn and Mary. The only possible marriage is a submitted entry which looks like pure speculation. Unless of course someone can come up with something a bit more substantial.
