*huffs and puffs*
I'm trying to discover what happened to these two couples who mysteriously vanish after 1871.
George Vowles (b 1843 Keynsham, Somerset)
Ann Williams (b abt 1843/44 Kelston or Saltford, Somerset)
The above couple married in 1865 and in 1871 can be found living in Saltford, Somerset (no children)
John Henry Huish (birth details uncertain!)
Margaret Mitchell (b 1845 Keynsham, Somerset) She is my relative :(
The above couple married in 1869 and in 1871 Margaret is living with her parents Thomas and Mary Mitchell (my 2xg-grandparents) in the parish of Ashley Down and Stapleton in Gloucestershire. Margaret says she is married but her husband isn't there. There is a Hy John Huish aged 30 in the Gloucester County Lunatic Asylum who is married, but I don't know if that is her husband and I can't find him on any previous census.
In June 1871 there is a court case reported in the Bristol Mercury. George Vowles has been caught by his wife writing letters to another woman (she found one he had written but not sent in his jacket pocket!). Once Annie Vowles had found the letter, George Vowles and a friend of his, Jesse Wheeler, set about generally making Annie's life a mysery - locking her in the house, verbally and physically abusing her etc. Both men were fined and bound over for 12 months. The recipient of the letters and the adressee of the letter not posted was Margaret Huish of Ashley Down :( who had also accompanied George Vowles on days out The newspaper made no comment about her being recently married or where her husband was.
I have not been able to find any of these people after the 1871 census. No deaths for any of them either. So, where did they go?
Thanks for reading..........If I dont answer any questions immediately that's because my daughter has just announced I am her taxi service for the next hour or so :(
