  • Death certificate query

I received my great grandmother's 1935 death cert yesterday.

This is the first English female death cert I have seen. Place of death is 5 Brunswick Square which googling shows was probably part of St Giles Hospital Camberwell. In the Occupation column there is the same address as the informant, my grandfather, followed by widow of ....and my gt grandfather's name and occupation.

Would I be right in thinking that the occupation column address would have been her usual address? And, if so, was it the norm to add a home address for any deaths occurring in a hospital?

Yes, that's right. I have a feeling that the home address would probably be put in the occupation column for people who died anywhere away from home, not just hospital, but not sure about that. Ooh, looking through my collection of death certificates to check, I see one of mine died at "230 High Street, South East Hackney". I wonder if that could be a hospital?

      Thanks Kate!

I am really surprised! I thought this Gt Grandmother had died in 1912 until the 1911 showed a sister in law of the same name and age hadn't died in the 1880s after all and that hers was the 1912 death. My father would have been in his twenties in 1935 and was at the same address as his father right up until he joined the army in 1940.

The only relative he ever mentioned was an aunt. He never, ever mentioned having any grandparent, let alone a grandmother living with them, and I had assumed they were all dead. I wonder why he never spoke of her?

(I couldn't see a hospital for your 230 High Street but St Thomas was in that area)

I've found the 230 High Street by Googling and it was Homerton Hospital, apparently.

Oh yes - found it now. I made the mistake of putting East Hackney instead of just Hackney. I see Anthony Newley was born there!
