What does this mean

I have a list of famous people related to my great grandfather, but have no idea what the relationships mean. For instance 1st cousin, 8 times removed, or 4th cousin 1 times removed. Could someone please explain to this rookie.

First cousin 8 times removed is easier to describe. It's a direct ancestor of your cousin, 8 generations back.
