  • Help Wanted: Charles Luff

Charles is one of my ancestors. In 1861, and aged 26, he is an agricultural labourer living at Eaton Socon, Hunts. With him are his wife Emma [29, nee Markham] and their children William [4], Emma [2], and George [3 months]. Also there is Sarah Gilliham, a 16-year old lodger employed at a paper factory. Try as I might, I have been unable to find him in either the 1851 census or the 1841. According to the IGI record of his marriage [7 Nov 1856], his father is, or could be, William. Can’t find him either! Does any helpful person out there have any ideas?

I can't find him either on an initial search.

I don't know if it helps to know that Eaton Socon is often described as being in Bedfordshire, rather than Hunts. I know its on the border.

    Where was Charles born?

Where was Charles born? Do you have the 1861 census ref so we can use it for reference?

Thanks for interest. In 1861 Charles' birthplace is shown as Easton Socon. As I have already discovered, it's close to the county boundary and while mainly in Hunts it can also appear as in Beds.

Thanks Joan. Looks very promising. It seems there's been an [another!] indexing error on the part of The Genealogist. I'll have to dig deeper. Can't dig the garden cos it's frozen.

Success! Have now found him thanks to FTF. Others can, too, as The Genealogist has updated their indexing.
