  • 1861 & 1971 census look-ups please

I would be very grateful if someone could PLEASE check the 1861 & 1871 census for my gggrandparents George (b1830 Hull) & Jane (nee Evans b1833 Rise, Yorkshire) Douglas. I have found them on the 1881 census living in Sculcoates district of Hull, but, as they were married in 1852, I wondered if there were any more children born 1853 to 1858 (I do know about Charles b1855 as he was my g grandfather) Other known children are William b c1859, Arthur b c1863 & Ada b c1868. I haven't found anything on Familysearch.

    Thanks so much

Sorry - all children born Hull & Jane born 1827 not 1833 ( I misread the age on the census as she was 3 years older than George not 3 years younger)

            Hi Lyn
Thanks very much for the quick reply, the information is interesting, but dare I ask another favour?
On the 1871 census could you please tell me if Andrew age 15 & Hannah age 5 are shown as son & daughter of George as they do not appear in any other census. I know this is not unusual as children sometimes moved around between family members or employers.

            Regards

                Hi Jeanette
Well it's good night here! WA time just after 10.30pm
Thanks for that. George & Jane have the usual large family for that era. I'll have to try & find out more about them. No wonder there are so many of the Douglas folk around the Hull area now!

                Happy families!

Oddly, none of those births seems to be on here:
                  Yorkshire Births Marriages & Deaths

But they may turn up later, of course!

The 1852 marriage does show up: at All Saints, Sculcoates

Expat....while you're still up! Do you have Charles in 1871? I'm wondering if Andrew is actually Charles and has been written down wrong by the enumerator. Mind you, Andrew is a blacksmith and Charles gave his occupation as labourer on his marriage cert

Christine (and anyone else working on this)...I did a look up at the records office for Expat for Charles's marriage

This looks like George and his family in 1841 all born in Yorkshire (Sub registration district East Sculcoates)

                                George Douglas 50 Coal Porter

In 1841 Jane Evans is a servant in Rise working for the Robinson family

                                  Jane Evan 14 HO107; Piece 1224; Book: 4;Folio: 3; Page: 23

I think this is probably Jane's mother in 1841 in Rise. The transcription lists her with the Ellis family but looking at the image I would say she was on her own

Ann Evans 35 (image says 55)
                                  Geo Ellis 43
                                  Mary Ellis 34
                                  David Ellis 4

Many, many thanks Jeanette, for the wealth of information & just when I'd almost given up on my Douglas side of the family.
I can't believe that I lived less than 5 miles from where some of my ancestors may be buried - Rise or Skirlaugh churches. It was really interesting to see some of the names on the old census sheets as quite a few of the families are still in those areas today, although the occupations are changed as there are not so many agricultural labourers, domestic servants, shoemakers, tailors or smiths around!

                                        Enjoy your day
