My GGrandfather was in the war (apparently) and suffered shellshock. I've tried looking at the medals and pension records, but can't find anything definite.

Is there anywhere else I can look to find out what he did whilst serving?

WW1 records are available online at Ancestry. If you dont have access, perhaps you could post the details and I/We can have a look for you.
There is also a site specialising in WW1..think its Invasionzone

If you know his army number and regiment etc you can request his war record from
I think it is the War Office. I got my dads but I cant remember where I wrote to.
It was some time ago (2 years)
Some army records are held in the archives at kew. Again you need army number etc.
Hope this may be of some help.

Yes I have just checked. There are records available at the National Archives Kew.
Military History ;your guide to resources. Then you follow the links.

It will tell you how to request records.

It depends on his surname as to whether or not his records are on Ancestry (if they have survived). Records on Ancestry are not complete yet for surnames beginning O-Z. They will be uploaded onto the site at some stage. These records are available to view at Kew. Unless he stayed in the Army into the 20's, there is nowhere to send off for his records. If he may have been an officer, then his records, again, if they have survived, will be at Kew.

I don't think he was an officer. As I said, he was sent home with shellshock. He was home by Sep 1918 as he got my GGrandmother pregnant.

His name starts with S, so he may not be there. I have found his brother though. Would they do it in stages?

No way I can get to Kew, so I guess I won't be able to find anything unless Ancestry deem it worthy.

            Thanks all

Have you managed to find his medal card? They are nearly all on Ancestry (it says there will be one more release). If you are having trouble working out which one is your ggrandfather he may have been awarded the Silver War Badge if he was invalided out. This was given to men who were discharged due to sickness or injury contracted at war and was first given in 1916 to show that they had been fighting for their country - it stopped people calling them cowards.

The soldier I have who had one has "SWB List" on his card

Jackie, no - that's my problem. I also don't understand how to read them, which doesn't help lol

I have found one with SWB on it. It's the one I thought could be him as he's in the WY regiment.

                Thank you

This is a good site that explains how to interpret a medal card

Thanks Jackie. That does make more sense now!

So, he has a Victory, British War and 1915 Star, plus the SWB.

I wonder what happened to them.

There are 2 regiment numbers. Does that mean he served twice?

It probably means that he was transferred from one regiment to another. Do you want to post the details of it here to see if anyone can work anything else out from it - alternatively if you want to pm me the details I can have a look if you would like.

                        If you don't mind.

                        It's Robert Siddle, West Yorkshire Regiment - 2945 & 265738

It doesn't look as though he changed regiments.

Theatre of war 1 was the Western Front

As you said there are a number of Robert Siddles so its difficult to work out which one is yours. He may well have received a pension so its worth keeping an eye on Ancestry to see if anything else comes up. Do you know if he and his brother joined together? If so there may be some clues to link the 2 together (although that's a long shot!)

The other thing you could do is post on the Great War Forum - they have a lot of knowledgeable people on there and some of them have interests in particular regiments

His brother joined the year before, also in France. He did switch regiments to the Machine Gun Corps.

Been searching for the Pension - according to the National Archives site, people who were injured should be listed on there. He's not

I've just joined that site. Just waiting for my confirmation email.
