You'll be able to pick up the birth and marriage RO entries via FreeBMD. The marriage was in W Ham, 1900q1, if you don't have it already.

There are some W Ham JACOBS children with mmn = WILLIAMS.

They should be on FreeBMD as well - and might be yours.

In 1911 they appear to have been at Feltham House, Golding Hill, Loughton

The children appear to be named:
Barbara Annis (I think that's a variant of Agnes?) - FreeBMD: Epping 1901q1
(not in 1911: Beatrice May - FreeBMD: Epping 1903q2)
Luned Marion (sic) - FreeBMD: Epping 1904q1
Hugh Wymark - FreeBMD: Epping 1905q3
Christopher Gage - FreeBMD: Epping 1907q1
(not in 1911, and a bit close to C G , above: Ivy Lillian - FreeBMD: Epping 1907q3)
(not in 1911: Edmund Burnett - FreeBMD: Epping 1908q3)
(not in 1911: Cecil Charles - FreeBMD: Epping 1909q3)
(not in 1911, and a bit close to C C above, and OM, below: Dudley Percival - FreeBMD: Epping 1910q1)

                  1901 - found them here:
                  Class: RG13; Piece: 1637; Folio: 139; Page: 50

3 month old Barbara has been enumerated as Barvara, and transcribed as Barnard.

He shows up in the London Gazette (Issue 24767 published on the 3 October 1879. Page 2 of 40) as being a Boy Clerk in the Post Office

and in the London Gazette (Issue 25245 published on the 26 June 1883. Page 8 of 54) as being 66th in order of merit out of 102 in the Civil Service exam.

I was going to have a look at FMP, in case there was anything there, but they seem to be in the midst of emergency website changes.

I seem to remember that his father did work in the docks as a clerk so no contradiction there. Further back one of his ancestors was a Captain of the Dock and further still one of them distinguished himself in the the naval battles of, I think, George III.

It would be interesting to know if the Jacobs name was Jewish in origin, apparently he did not believe it was. He thought it was from Welsh origins.

There's a blue plaque for WW Jacobs in what used to be the Prince Charles School of Architecture near Regents Park. It was unveiled about ten years ago.

Other than that I can add that there is a Hollywood film proposed for his short story, 'The Monkey's Paw', produced by Sam Raimi (director of Spiderman).

                                        William W Jacobs

I've just joined Family Tree Forum so that I can contact the people who have been writing about my grandfather W.W. Jacobs. Is anyone distantly related to him?

He had five children: Barbara, Luned, Hugh, my father Christopher and Olwen.

His mother Sophia (nee Wymark) died of puerperal fever after the stillbirth of her sixth child and his father, William Gage Jacobs, married Ellen Flory and had seven more children.

William Wymark Jacobs (1863-1943) worked for years as a clerk at the Post Office Savings Bank but only gave up his secure income when it was clear that he could make a good living from writing.

His father, William Gage Jacobs, was the manager of South Devon Wharf (near the Tower of London) from 1875 until the early 20th century.

The family were originally from Suffolk and Essex. Some were Masters of merchant vessels, some were Customs officers and Capital Burgesses in Harwich. The earliest Jacobs ancestor I have found was Ralph Jacobs who married Elizabeth Bailey in Burstall, near Ipswich, in 1700.

I have seen a lot of mistakes in transcribed records such as Gage being spelt Page and Vince being spelt Vrine. William Gage Jacobs' mother's maiden name was Louisa Gage Vince.
