  • James Saumarez .....

    A name ripe for mis-transcription!
Please can anyone find him in either 1841 or 1861? In 1851 he was in Cheltenham, which was one of his residences.

Born in Guernsey 1789 - by 1841 he was widowed, no children as far as we know. Also known as Rev de Saumarez, or Lord de Saumarez, 2nd Baron de Saumarez.
NOT a rellie, I'm not that well connected, it's in connection with a local history project.

This looks like him in 1861 in Cheltenham (transcribed as James de Saumary)

      Hi Jay

I guess he must have been connected to Sausmarez Manor on Guernsey?

        Thanks Jackie, off to look.

Joan - yes he was. I understand the Saumarez family are still influential on the island, although a slightly different branch. Difficult to find a lot of information about him, although loads about his famous father, an admiral and the 1st Lord.

Thankyou, Jackie. That's definitely him - brilliant.

Just 1841 to go - his wife was Mary, born Halton Bucks, 1791, if that helps at all.

Janet he could have been "In transit" to England in 1841. Unfortunately as the 1841 census doesn't give place of birth if they are not born in England finding him could be difficult.

My 2 x great grandfather was travelling to Jersey in 1861 so I have never been able to find him on the census in either country.

Thankyou for that suggestion, Joan - indeed he could.
One of the problems of researching people with money - they could up and wander as fancy took them.
