  • Having trouble tracing info on my great grandaprents

Can anyone offer me some advice on searching for my great grandparents and their ancestors? All I know at the moment is their names and I'm having no luck tracking them down.

My grandfather was John Henry Evans 6 Feb 1895 - 12 Apr 1967. He was born in Forden, Montgomeryshire. His birth certificate shows that his parents were John Evans and Susan Wood, but that's as far as I can get. The fact that he was called John Evans doesn't help! Any hints or tips would be gratefully received.

Do I take it that you haven't found them on the 1901 census?

Think I have them in 1901

Do you have access to Ancestry?

Not a trace, unfortunately. I tried my grandfather's name on the 1911 Census site and found a possible entry, but he wasn't living with his parents.

Yes, I have an Ancestry subscription. Off to check your reference!

ETS: Ooh, yes, that's them! It shows my grandfather as Henry, but it's definitely him. Thanks. :D I obviously need to approach my searches from a different angle.

Thank you. A slight typo in the transcription as it's Penyllan Cottage, but that's not a problem. Interesting about the MILs surname, though, as Susan's name was Wood. Could have remarried, I suppose. Thanks again.

Wales ancestry is a whole new world to me. All of mine are in England.

Glad you now have more info to help you along the way.

I tried using John as a first name and nothing. So just used the surname and John as father, Susan as mother and Forden in the Keyword.

Wonder if Susan went by Gittins as well for a while?

Only this looks like her and Mary in 1891

Edit, no it's a mistranscription she is Wood on the image. Teach me to look at the image first.

It's possible. How do I find your reference at Ancestry. Sorry, but I've only ever done name searches. :o

Go to the census you want, in this case the 1891 Wales census. Scroll down on the refine your search and at the bottom is a place to enter the detail. I usually remove all names incase of mistranscriptions.

And it looks like Thomas Woods is really Nicholas Thomas after his father.

Mmmmmm could it really be this easy, in 1861 Nicholas is with his family and there just happens to be a Mary Jones working for them of the right age and birth place.
