Mary Frazer McHarg Graham , born Dumfries 27/5/1837 to George Graham and Mary Strong.

She married John Hepburn Low in Dumfries in 1860

1862 daughter Grizelle Blackie Low born in Dumfries. I can find no further mention of this child.

Second child Mary Strong Low, born Birkenhead 1866 (she died there 1867.)

John Hepburn Low died Birkenhead 1870.

Mary was in Birkenhead in 1871 listed as widow and a visitor at her sister's house.

WHERE DID SHE GO NEXT ??

        Any help gratefully received.
        Cath.

Sorry, can't see them in 1871, but still looking.

            Hi Uncle John,

1871 RG70/3747 shows Mary Low as a visitor in the household of Joseph Pye. (His wife, Caroline was Mary's sister.) There's another child with her now but I can't make out the name. I no longer have access to Ancestry and the copy I have of 1871 is very poor.
            Cath.

Have you got the complete reference for 1871 just in case I can't find it? Off to have a look now.

                Well, what a useless enumerator!

                RG10; Piece 3747; Folio 144; Page 8

The surname Pye has been transcribed as Pepe. This has been corrected to Pye by "derby245", the helpful explanation being "Ancestor".

This is the household (22 Regent Place, Birkenhead) as I read it on the image:

Joseph Pye Head married 52 Master Plumber England
Catherine M do. Wife married 24 Scotland
Catherine M do. Dau. 13 England
William P do. Son 6 Scotland
Mary L do. Dau. 3 England
Mary Low Visitor wid. 33 Dress maker Scotland
                Ellen Low Visitor 3 England

From the ages of the Pye children it looks as if Catherine is William's second wife.

You didn't mention Ellen Low, who must have been conceived just before her father died.

Thanks Uncle John. I've got info re the Pye family BUT nobody seems to know what happened to Mary Low or the eldest and youngest of her daughters.

The only Ellen Low birth that's anywhere near Birkenhead is

                    q1 1867 Ormskirk vol 8b page 687.

I can't see a corresponding death and the nearest 1881 match is a servant aged 14 who was born in St. Helens.

Sorry Cath. I've tried a few wildcards and other tricks, and I can't see anything else.

And the Ellen Low birth doesn't seem to have been transcribed on LancsBMD

I should think this birth is more likely for Ellen:

                        Births Dec 1867
                        Low Helen Birkenhead 8a 408

                            No, I know! Nor can I :(

I've been going all through the people called Mary Fraser X at death (plus variations of Fraser) to see if any of them might be your Mary, but most can be eliminated (as they are findable in 1871). Just in case she changed her surname but forgot to get married ! (or the marriage hasn't reached the GRO)

A birth in Birkenhead (Cheshire) explains why there's nothing showing on LancsBMD. I had yesterday off (organising a Burns Supper at the church last night).
