  • Does anybody know Hull?

I still haven't given up on my mysterious Walker family.

After appearing fully formed on the 1871 census in Leeds, the head of the house, Thomas Walker, consistently gives his age as 42, 52, 62 and 72, born Hull, through the censuses from 1871 to 1901.
He's still going in 1911, only now he's 83 and he gives his place of birth, very accurately, as Waterhouse Lane, Hull.
Does anyone know what part of Hull this would come under - I've just found a website with Hull & Sculcoates PRs and may need to take the plunge.

    Thanks
    Helen

    Its is Myton, HolyTrinity.

Click on thefollowing link and select Myton
    1861 England Census - Ancestry.co.uk

Then view description of enumeration district 31 which will give you an idea of the other streets in the district.

      Thanks Elaine.

Myton - it would be. :o
A big black hole for me. I've another family supposedly in Myton. They're good at hiding from the enumerators too.

Have you checked Ancestry - Myton is listed?

Was Thomas married twice? I ask as in 1871 Thomas is married to Ellen, there's 5 sons, aged 20, 12, 10, 7, 2. Could the eldest son have been born to a previous wife, as the 8 year gap seems strange?

              Hi Susan,

I've not been able to find anything on this family before they appear in Leeds. I have the birth certificate for Charles - which gives Elen's maiden name as Smith.
I had umpteen tries at finding birth certificates for the other boys and marriage certificated for Thomas & Ellen. All without success.
I have marriage certs for Edward, John & Harry, and Ellen's death cert.

I can't believe that they successfully avoided leaving any paper trail in Hull, but moved to Leeds and suddenly became law-abiding.

I think it was the East Yorkshire FHS, Anne.

The records are to buy, in book form I think.

                    Hello Helen,

It does sound like you've searched and better searched for these rellies, so I apologise if I'm posting records you've already investigated.

Two John W Walker's were born in Hull 1850/1.

                    1. John William Walker 4th qrt 1850, vol 22, page 452.
                    2. John William Walker 3rd qrt 1851, vol 22, page 487.

Maybe a possible marriage for Thomas and Ellen?

                    4TH qrt 1856, Sheffield, vol 9c, page 475.

Thomas Walker, and on same page Ellen Smith.
