  • Street Maps

    Hi
Many of my ancestors came from the area where I live, but many of the roads mentioned in records no longer exist. I would like to find out where they were. Where would be the best place to find street maps 1880- 1900. Would it be the Records office or library ?
    Thank you Bristol Boy

I would try your local library first. I know that mine has loads of old local maps.

I think that there are links on Genuki to old maps, as well as a few sites that specialise in them - in some cases as commercial sales sites.

            I agree with Edna.

I bought one of these for the area where I was born in 1946. It's for 1894 and shows many roads where my ancestors were born and lived that weren't there even when I was born.

Sometimes old large-scale OS maps come up on Ebay. I got an excellent one of mid-19th. century Sunderland for only a pound or two.

Thank you Trish, for the link. I am a Bristol Boy as well and found the 1910 Bristol map very useful

2nd hand bookshops can be a good source too. Mine has lots of old OS maps, other maps and travel/motoring guides for England and Wales with coverage of most counties.
