Are you absolutely sure these women were siblings, and not just "grandchildren" - i.e. different mothers?
Yes, I do have a story of one side being obliterated from family memory, due to a messy divorce in the 1930s. I didn't even know this side of the family existed until I started doing family history. When I questioned my dad, he said "Oh, we never had anything to do with them". Dad's relative was the innocent party in the divorce!

Looking at the 1881 & 91 census I'd say Lilian was the daughter of William's unmarried daughter Emily born ca 1853. Her birth cert would of course confirm her parentage
