I have just been looking for one of my rellies births. I couldn't find anything on the ancestry bmd so tried on the sheffield bmd. I found it straight away! Does anyone know why it would show on here but not on ancestry?

Local bmds are "more accurate" than the GRO. Many events never reached the GRO, or if they did, were omitted from the index by accident, or so mangled that you have no hope of finding them.

I now have seven certificates from local register offices which never made it to the GRO. One of these certs DID make it to the GRO, but is indexed under the man's middle name as a surname.

As I didn't know he HAD a middle name till I tracked down the cert, I could never find him.

In case there is any confusion, births on the Sheffield BMD index are nothing to do with parish records but are from the civil registration books.
