  • HELP....Security problem.

I was just on google looking for something and I saw what I though I was after on an Ebay site. Clicked that and up came a security alert.

It said it was from Microsoft and I had been infected with 58 Win32 worms (I think) and some Trojans.

Anyway, it wanted me to click on a link to install a critical Windows update.

I didn't do that and then couldn't get out of the site. It also wanted me to allow pop-ups but wouldn't do that either.

I got out of the site with alt+ctrl+delete.

Then I went to Nod32 and ran a scan. That found nothing.
Then I ran Spybot. I got the usual few entries, but also a new one from..

    Microsoft,Windows.Security,InternetExplorer
    1 entry Security....Registry change.

Could it have been someone/thing pretending to be from Microsoft???? Or should I have clicked on the critical download???

    I get automatic updates.

Now if I minimise this site and try to open IE in a new window, it says it is not responding.
I came back here without a problem though.

You definitely shouldn't click to download if you get that message and it definitely isn't a genuine Microsoft thing.

Microsoft NEVER send warnings like these
ANY pop-up you get warning you about viruses, that is not generated by your own personal anti-virus programme (You MUST have one installed to protect your system), are FAKE!

Their sole pupose is to scare you into installing a program on your PC which, in fact, is a virus itself!

NEVER click on 'install' of 'close' on these pop-ups, as BOTH could actually be the install trigger.
Click on the 'cross' on the top right edge instead.

McAfee – Computer Anti-Virus Software and Internet Security For Your PC

This type of virus is known as a 'Trojan', like the greek horse, it is a programme that claims to be one thing, but is actually doing something else.
        1. a Keylogger
This records key presses when you visit websites that require passwords etc, this is then sent to the creator of the virus when you next go on the net, so allowing them access to your online accounts
        2. Adware/Mailware
This tracks your visits to sites on the web, then starts generating pop-up adverts to reflect the profile you are building for them.
        3. Browser Hijacker
This takes control of your browser settings, changes your home page to wherever they want to send you, forces your browser to go to porn sites etc.

          .
That is evidence that it was attempting to make changes on your PC without your permission.

Disconnect from the net before doing any scan, as it could still continue its install download.

Then run a full antivirus scan on your PC before going back online

We use AVG Free - Download antivirus and antispyware software for Windows XP and Vista which is a great security programme. Hope you get sorted!

              Thanks all.

I didn't download the install as I thought my Nod32 would have picked it up. I must admit it was near impossible to get out of that screen though.

I did run my scan and found nothing, but I will run it again thsi morning.

When you say "get out of the internet" do you mean just click the red and white cross on the top right ot dis-connect the modem. I have ADSL broadband.
