Well as it's just you two Merry & Augustus ;)

I entered the first name, then put a full stop for the surname, gave me all surnames with that first name. No good for common first names of course, but I selected an area too.
I was actually looking for Chrissy Smiff's Fosters just by entering Clementina and the . in the surname box (no luck
        yet Chrissy)
Gave me all the Clementinas in Notts

So............. using this method lets you see everyone in a household even if they have a different surname.

Put your known rellie into the first name & surname in the "Others members of household" boxes
then just put a full stop in the top box surname bit.

I hope I have explained that well enough!!

HOUSEHOLD BRUCE CORINNA MARIA F 1862 49 Windsor Berkshire
HOUSEHOLD BRUCE GRACE KATHERINE F 1852 59 Windsor Berkshire
HOUSEHOLD MERRY ALICE LILIAN F 1884 27 Windsor Berkshire
HOUSEHOLD MERRY ERNEST M 1883 28 Windsor Berkshire
HOUSEHOLD MERRY GERALD ERNEST M 1910 6 MONTHS Windsor Berkshire
HOUSEHOLD MERRY GRACE CORINNO OLITTE F 1909 2 Windsor Berkshire

This is my lot - Grace Merry is my grandmother (both middle names mispelt), I have actually got this image so I know that these are all in the same household.
Good to be able to check before spending credits though.

This is how the search page starts

                Personal details
                First names

                *Last name

                _____________________________________________

The * meaning you cannot search without a surname, well OH YES YOU CAN
Just put a . in the surname box

                ______________________________________________

The to find other people in the same house with different surames (if there are any of course)

see this bit further down the search page ....
                Other members of the household
                First names
                Last names

Well just enter your ancestor in there ( I put Grace Merry) then just put a . in the top surname box (no first name) you will then see if anyone else with a different surname is with your lot.

It does work! I just tried it with granddad's surname as a dot, but with his surname in other household & it found him mistranscribed with his brothers under their correct names. I had already found them the other day by tracking the brothers but I was lucky because their surname is not that common.

Well done Sammy thanks I will definitely use that in future!

Thanks Sammy I'll give this a try, I was hoping to knock down a few towers (not simply brick walls) with the help of this census but failed miserably.

It certainly works, though you do have to play around with the name you choose, to reduce the number of mismatches. It gives everyone in the household including servants and visitors (though just as names and ages if you're a skinflint like me). And very useful if the form-filler's spelling was a bit off.

                                  Sammy THANKYOU.

This is great for tracking down mistranscriptions, in rural areas anyway.

Couldn't find any of friend's rellies. not even when I put in the village name.
Following Sammy's post, I just typed in James (.) then name of village - up came all the James entries and there he was, mistranscribed!

                                  Brilliant search strategy.

Right im not 100% sure on how to use the search:o

For example im looking for my missing rellie Jessie Hodson born 1894 Chester.

Im not able to find her, also if i were able to find her how could i pull up all that may be in her household?

                                    Sorry to be thick:o

I'd start off putting Hodson (no first name in case its different) born 1894 +/- 2 years and Chester, and see what comes up. Jessie could have called herself something else and I guess Hodson could be mistranscribed. And she might have got married and not be a Hodson any more.

She married a gentleman named William Bellis in 1915 in Chester.

I have her parents and some of her younger siblings on the 1911 census but as she was 17 she may have been working as a servant.

Her future husband was from Wales so i guess she may be living somewhere in Wales.
