  • Surname mistranscriptions within a family in 1911

I suppose it does give you two bites at the cherry.

There aren't too many Cecil Rileys about, so I used that name as a locator for the rest of my family. Fine, the index pulled up a family... except that the three youngest children are missing.

Looking for Cecil Riley, with an Olive unknown in the family proves that she was at home. So was Frank, so was Mabel.

But just how Riley was mistranscribed eludes me. I've used alternative spellings, transposed letters, P,K,B for R, but no solution.

Thanks to Smiley Sammy's thread here:

I've tried Cecil Riley in the "other Members of the Household" bit and Olive "dot" for the main person. I get two results:

Olive (no surname recorded) b 1905 living at Portsmouth, Hants.

or Olive Gerty Robb b 1900 living at Newark, Notts.

I hope one of these is the right household for your family!

        Thanks Sammy! lol

In some of my results lists, it looks like the same person has been indexed twice, with slight spelling variations.

Talk about slow! I read Sammy's thread today, checked her method, found my missing granny and then found Olive, so came back to this thread, to see you'd already tried.

              Thank you all!

And of course I couldn't have found Olive otherwise as she doesn't have a surname!
