  • Missing birth....?

When I looked on the 1911 census I found my gt gt grandmother had 3 children who died. I am trying to find them and I have a good possibility Walter James Hale who died in Q3 1884 aged 0 in Aston but I can't find a birth for him. Any suggestions why.

    Many thanks

Sometimes if children died quite quickly after birth there wasn't time to register both events so only the death was registered. I have one where the child was 3 months old when he died and there is no birth reg. People had 3 months in which to do it.

That makes very good sense thank you. Think I might have to bite the bullet and get the cert to check it out.

Yes I think that's where it'll get a bit confusing. Stillbirths and deaths of new borns will be known by the Mother and Father but not necessarily registered.

In fact I'm not sure stillborns were registered birth or death there is a thread about it on here somewhere about Stillbirths.

But the family will count them, I don't expect they'll have forgotten however many died or how they died.

I would check the original GRO pages first.....

          Births Jun 1884
Hall Walter James Aston 6d 275

          Deaths Sep 1884
          HALE Walter James 0 Aston 6d 198
          Hall Walter James 0 Aston 6d 198

          just in case!

Stillbirths were not registered in a permanent record until 1927.

You had six weeks to register a birth, not three months!

Yeah I knew it was six weeks for registration (still is) but I forgot to point that out in my post.

                Thank you.

I'm just getting used to this, how do you search the the original GRO I did my search on FMP? Is that not as good?

                  Thank you!

So does that entry mean that the birth was possibly listed as Hall not Hale due to a mistranscription and then when the death was registered the mistake was rectified by using both Hall and Hale?

Sorry if that is totally wrong idea!

By 1884 it was mandatory for the parents to register a birth and if a baby died soon after birth I would imagine they would register both events at the same time.

Looks as if Merry has solved it anyway!

The FMP pages are the GRO pages. Those entries I listed are from FreeBMD. The only one I looked at on the original pages is the Hale death and that is there.

Might be better to try the Aston register office as they might do a lookup without charging (if there isn't a cert for Hale) if you know the parents names.

Ahhh yes I do know the parents name I'll try that.

Thank you for all the help.
