  • Bailey Fly Proprietors of Leamington

Looking for Charles and Thomas Joseph Bailey Fly Proprietors of Leamington.

Thomas Joseph Bailey marriage to Jane Holway
    3 Oct 1866 – Farmborough, Somerset
    Groom Condition - Bachelor
    Groom Occupation – Fly Proprietor
    Groom Abode – Leamington
    Groom Father – Charles Bailey
Groom Father’s Occupation - Fly Proprietor

All of the above from FreeReg.

    Earliest census find is Thomas
    1871 Census - RG10; Piece: 3194; Folio: 62; Page: 5
Thomas J Bailey born 1840 Leamington, Warwickshire (head) – Fly Proprietor
Jane Bailey born 1839 Hemyock, Devon (wife)
Harry Bailey born 1871 Leamington (son 1month)

Cannot find Thomas in census returns for 1861, 1851 or 1841.
Nor can I find Charles as above.

Before I send off (to the GRO) for a copy of the marriage certificate (to confirm parents etc.) does anyone have any other suggestions as to avenues of research to find Thomas and Charles.

    Hmmm........

1851 there's L J Bailey (that's the transcript, but it's actually written T J Bailey) b 1840 at Leamington and living at Leamington Priors. His father is Henry though. In 1841 Thomas is 2, living same place.

Henry may have the wrong name (lol) but he is a carman, which means he would likely have been employed by a fly proprietor!!

On the England & Wales Christening records on Ancestry:

        Thomas Joseph Bailey
Christening 27 Mar 1842 Leamington, Warwick
        Father Joseph Bailey, mother Elizabeth.

        - which doesn't match what you are looking for but thought it worth a mention!

                  T J Bailey

Thank you very much Merry and Christine (I think)
Although it leads me to believe the FreeReg transcription might be wrong I have just looked at the census for 1851 Leamington Priors. As you say there are Baileys as below at 15 Regent Street and this ties in with the entry in White's Directory for 1850. It further ties into the 1841 census that you mentioned Merry.
Henry Baly (sic) Head, age 58, Carman, born Wilts, Barwick
E Bailey Wife, age 53, born Essex, Waltham Abbey
S A Bailely Daur, age 19, born Essex, Woodford AND
T J Bailey Son, age 11, born Warks, Leamington.
It looks like I will have to send for the marriage certifcate now. I just hope it does not throw up any further possibilities.
For information Thomas Joseph Bailey died in 1874 and one of his sons Harry
(1871) emigrated to Australia where he died in 1953.

I have just seen the same marriage record (with father Charles) on some transcribed Farmborough marriages via a Yahoo Group, so, assuming this was a transcription done separately to the FreeREG one, the father is most likely to be Charles on the marriage cert.

It wouldn't be the first time a father's name has been mis-entered!!

                      Henry Bailey

                      Thanks for that Merry.
Will save my money for now.
Found Henry Bailey and wife Elizabeth in 1861 still at 14 Regent Street, Leamington Priors. He is now a Car Proprietor. age 68 and Elizabeth's age is also shown as 68.
