I managed to have a look at one original this morning but didnt have time for anything else. Does teh transcription give all the same details as the original. For instance on the original I discovered this morning that my great grandparents had a 3rd child but had died will that kind of info also be on teh transcription or do they just give the names and ages etc?

You won't see the actual address, or how many rooms or details of how many children.
The address is at the bottom of the transcrptions I have had.
Also worth knowing .....if it is an institution and your relative is not on the first page of the actual image you will not get the address of the institution, you will however get this on the transcription :(;) Helen x

"one I found in the workhouse did not give how long she had been married on the original image, or how many children she had"
Mary this is filled in for the women on the institution sheet I viewed for my great great great grandmother, for the married women, widows of course were not required to give this info. I have had the aforementioned problem though, I have no idea what the institution in question is, as the adress is not on the original form.

I viewed the transcription only for my 1yr old uncle who was in an institution and the address was there on the transcription but I did not need to see the original as I had the rest of the family already, and his mother had just died so I think he was only there until he could be looked after by the father.

Thats not on the transcription.
Richard, although the address isn't on the image (unless you are lucky enough to have your relative listed on the first page of the Institution's schedule) it WILL be on the transcript so, unless you are looking for a married woman and want extra info re number of children its as well to go for the cheaper option.
Gloryer, you're right that the number of children born alive/living/died is not on the transcript, but the number of years married is transcribed.Last edited by JudithM; 14-01-09, 06:55.Judith passed away in October 2018

I have looked at the examples in the 1911 site, and can't see an address on the actual image.
I am easily confused, more so at present recovering from bronchitis.
Is the address on both the image and the transcription, please?
I'll probably go for the images for three so I can see the actual writing of my great-grandparents, looking forward to that.
Thank you.
Going for a rest. BRBJoy

Hi yes Judith, that's right. I think its pretty off though that in the case of an instituion if you want the adress and the full details of the image, generally you have to spend 40 credits, which equates to roughly 4 pounds. I think if you've already paid for the image you should get the transcription details automatically.

Yes, Joy, the address is usually on the image and the transcription (except for institutions).Last edited by KiteRunner; 14-01-09, 09:56.KiteRunner

Looking and looking again - my great-grandfather's writing is so much like my father's.
One niggle, but never mind, I knew the area where he would be anyway; no address given, even though it said household, for the residence of my mother's father; he was a policemen, with other policemen.Joy

An interesting one for me - I looked up OH's grandfather and there he was on the transcript - fine. Then I looked at the original and g/grandfather was there too (no mention of him on the transcript).
But - there was a line through his entry and a note to say that he was 'at sea on HMS........', having sailed on April 1 - the day before the census.
It would appear that g/grandfather's elderly aunt had been drafted in to look after the children, as their mother had died by then. I presume that she entered him as being a physical part of the household and this was corrected later.
If I'd just had the transcript, I'd never have known where g/grandfather was in 1911 - fascinating.
Sorry to witter on, but concerning the household transcript again. The names of the three children have changed greatly from the 1901. I now know that 3 out of 6 children died, but with the name changes, I'm now meeting myself coming back - I don't really know who was who apart from grandfather - the only boy!
But I do so love a mystery...........
GwynFreya - a lovely, funny human-friendly disaster waiting to happen....
