  • Help reading occupation & where are they in 1881?

I am trying to trace Charles J Hoyle, born approx 1866 Upperthong/Kirkburton Yorkshire. I found him on 1871 census, ref:

    Class: RG10 Piece 4350 Folio 65 Page 22

    Charles Hoyle 30 b Upperthong
    Mary Hoyle 30 b Kirkburton
    Albert Hoyle 7 b Upperthong
    Charles J Hoyle 5 b Upperthong
    Joseph Hoyle 4 b Upperthong

Can anyone find them in 1881?

I think they re-appear in Wooldale/Holmsfirth in 1891 Mary is now a widow:

    RG12 Piece 3558 Folio 107 Page 22

    Mary Hoyle 49
    Albert Hoyle 27
    Charles J Hoyle 25
    Vinnie Hoyle 15
    Emily B Hoyle 6
    Amy G Hoyle 9

Can anyone read Charles J Hoyle's occupation for me? Something to do with the police?

    Thanks!

I think I just found them transcribed as Hayle in 1891 :

    Class: RG11 Piece 4371 Folio 106 Page 31

Can anyone still tell me the occupation for 1891 ?

    Thanks!

It's definitely police constable. The word in front looks like Laldy. The word after constable is difficult to read but in a different hand and probably a tally note for the enumerator.

          Apparently Nell!

I am stuck on the geography as this is the furthest north I've ventured, lol!

Maps of the world, street map search - powered by Multimap

It seems to include Holmfirth/Kirkburton Wooldale area.

Any Yorkies around that could help us?

Can you find Charles J Hoyle in 1901? He was born around 1866 but was lying about his age by 1902 lol. He said he was born in 1872 when he married :(

On the transcript I've looked at his occupation is:
Lately Police Constable, does that mean he's now out of work?

I'm now confused even more as I can't find anything with the 2nd ref you posted. Doesn't the first one fit better with 1871? Albert and Charles' ages fit well.

Who did he marry, and where, what age did he say he was in 1902?

Could be lately, with the writer forgetting to cross the t. Maybe he was dismissed for drunkenness? (that happened a lot in the Met!). I guess the Yorkshire police records would be at the relevant archives.

Thanks Leclerc, I think you are right!

He married Louisa Wilson in Thorp Arch Dec 1901. He said he was aged 29, a bachelor, from Boston Spa, father just named as "Hoyle" on cert no first name, "deceased".

Sorry Nell which ref did you want, the one for 1891 again?
