I like to use Bcc when mailing a few people with the same item. Have I understood this correctly that to use this method I need to put my own email address in the top box TO: otherwise people will receive mail addressed to the first person on my Bcc list.

I do not think that it is right for others to view my contacts private addresses which they have given me in confidence. It is also an open door for scam mail and bugs to spread.

Hi Margaret as far as I know you put the first persons email address you are sending to on your list not your own , but it also means each individual you are sending it too knows the others addresses too, I hate it when I get emails like that as all the people in that list have my email address without my consent.
    Hope your well

      Hi Margaret,
Whatever address you put in the TO line will be seen by anyone that is in the BCC line, although no-one else will see who is in the BCC section, that is why it is better to put your own address in TO, and that way no-one you are sending it to will know any other address. It's the safest way to do it if you need to preserve anonyminity for all addresses.

When I'm sending the same information to more than one person I always use BCC.

I don't put anything in the TO line - just leave it blank.
I go to the BCC line and put in the names of the adressees there. I have the list of recipients but each recipient sees only my email address as sender and has no idea who other recipients are.

I wish everyone knew of the BCC facility.
I am sick and tired of getting "circulars" with a million others' names and addresses on, likewise they all see my address, which I am not happy about.
My sis in law sends us half a dozen joke things every day, and I've lost count of the number of times I've asked her to use BCC, but she takes no notice, so there's our e.mail open for the whole world to see. I would love to block her altogether, but she would take offense I know . Families huh?

Pleased that I am not alone in thinking along this line. I suggest that we all explain this to people who send us jokes and photographs etc. One day I had about four A4 pages of addresses from around the world at the head of a Joke that I received. I did look at it on webmail so was able to delete and not download.

Wouldn't you believe it - just when I wanted an email I sent I've actually deleted it - an emptied the trash!!! I was getting so many of those "circulars" - from three people in particular, so I sent a very polite "round robin" (supposedly) email to them, explaining that in view of the amount of spam being received nowadays and the problems with on-sending emails, in future I would no longer be returning or forwarding any of these emails. If they really felt the necessity to send such emails in future I would consider it a great favour if they could send them to my gmail account, which is a whiz at sorting out spam etc. I then explained that I was doing this to try and help save our systems from going under overload and to try and stop some of the viruses coming into our computers.

I am so cross that I deleted it - so far the three people I sent it to haven't sent me one "funny"!!!!

I have a copy of an email that explains the reasons for sending copies BCC but my niece took offense when I sent it to her.

I feel I can't win but I can send it to anyone who would like it or I could try & paste it here.

Me too Vivienne, I sent a copy of an e.mail which explains very clearly, and politely, ALL the reasons why it's better NOT to show a million other people's addresses.....I think I c/p'd it, probably the same one as you've got. Anyway it explains how to use BCC and everything.
But I know my sis in law took offence because she sent a short message back telling me she had an excellent virus checker in place!!!!! She didn't seem to understand the bit about me not wanting my e.mail address displayed for the whole world to see.
The only good thing that came of it was that she stopped sending these darned things - for one week!!!! They now continue to come through thick and fast, as before.
You just can't win with some folk!!!!!!!! LOL

                      Vivienne,

Maybe you would consider putting the main content of your copy letter on this site as it may become noticed by others.

I don't know how one is placed in the UK regarding the Data Protection Act. I have signed it for other reasons which is why I have to be so carefull.

The Data Protection Act only applies to companies, not to private individuals passing email addresses around, Margaret.

                          Would it be this one??

                          Very Useful Information?

A friend who is a computer expert received the following directly from a system administrator for a corporate system. It is an excellent message that ABSOLUTELY applies to ALL of us who send e-mails. Please read the short letter below, even if you're sure you already follow proper procedures.

Do you really know how to forward e-mails? 50% of us do; 50% DO NOT.

Do you wonder why you get viruses or junk mail? Do you hate it? Every time you forward an e-mail there is information left over from the people who got the message before you, namely their e-mail addresses and names. As the messages get forwarded along, the list of addresses builds, and builds, and builds, and all it takes is for some poor sap to get a virus, and his or her computer can send that virus to every E-mail address that has come across his computer. Or, someone can take all of those addresses and sell them or send junk mail to them in the hopes that you will go to the site and he will make five cents for each hit. That's right, all of that inconvenience over a nickel! How do you stop it? Well, there are several easy steps.
Try the following if you haven't done it before:

                          (1) When you forward an e-mail, DELETE all of the other addresses that appear in the body of the message (at the top). That's right, DELETE them. Highlight them and delete them, backspace them, cut them, whatever it is you know how to do. It only takes a second. You MUST click the "Forward" button first and then you will have full editing capabilities against the body and headers of the message. If you don't click on "Forward" first, you won't be able to edit the message at all.

                          (2) Whenever you send an e-mail to more than one person, do NOT use the To: or Cc: fields for adding e-mail addresses. Always use the 'BCC' (blind carbon copy) field for listing the e-mail addresses. This is the way the people you send to will only see their own e-mail address. If you don't see your 'BCC': option click on where it says To: and your address list will appear. Highlight the address and choose BCC: and that's it, it's that easy. When you send to BCC: your message will automatically say "Undisclosed Recipients in the "TO:" field of the people who receive it.

                          (3) Remove any "FW :" in the subject line. You can re-name the subject if you wish or even fix spelling.

                          (4) ALWAYS hit your Forward button from the actual e-mail you are reading . Ever get those e-mails that you have to open 10 pages to read the one page with the information on it? By Forwarding from the actual page you wish someone to view, you stop them from having to open many e-mails just to see what you sent.

                          (5) Have you ever gotten an email that is a petition? It states a position and asks you to add your name and address and to forward it to 10 or 15 people or your entire address book. The email can be forwarded on and on and can collect thousands of names and email addresses. A FACT: The completed petition is actually worth a couple of bucks to a professional spammer because of the wealth of valid names and email addresses contained therein. DO NOT put your email address on any petition. If you want to support the petition, send it as your own personal letter to the intended recipient. Your position may carry more weight as a personal letter than a laundry list of names and email address on a petition. (And don't believe the ones that say that the email is being traced, it just ain't so!)

Some of the other emails to delete and not forward are:

                          1. The one that says something like, "Send this email to 10 people and you'll see something great run across your screen." Or sometimes they'll just tease you by saying 'something really cute will happen.' IT AIN'T GONNA HAPPEN!!!!! (We are still seeing some of the same emails that we waited on 10 years ago!)

                          2. I don't let the bad luck ones scare me either, they get trashed.

                          3. Before you forward an 'Amber Alert', or a 'Virus Alert', or some of the other emails floating around nowadays, check them out before you forward them. Most of them are junk mail that's been circling the net for YEARS! Just about everything you receive in an email that is in question can be checked out a Snopes. Just go to Welcome - Family Tree Forum . It's really easy to find out if it's real or not. If it's not, please don't pass it on.

So please, in the future, let's stop the junk mail and the viruses.

Finally, here's an idea!!! Let's send this to everyone we know ( but strip my address off first, please). This is something that SHOULD be forwarded, so please do it.

                          Thanks

                            Marion,

That is great let us hope that members and visitors together read this text. I have tried on many occassions to get the subject into a magazine ~ readers letter's section. So far I have not been sucessful. While I did not understand emails some ten years+ ago as I did not have a PC I did go to a one year course at the tech college on how to use a computer. I always remember the tutor opened every class with this subject as a reminder to all.

                            Thank you.
