  • Introduction and plea for help

    Hello,
I'm Brian, part Cumbrian, part Geordy, living in Lancs . . long story

I'm the UK based researcher for an American author who is writing a book about an English fishing reel maker.

If anyone can help with the name Dingley (William Henry, aka Walter, 1858 - 1946. Born West Brom; most of working life in Alnwick, Northumberland.) I'd be very grateful.

Also interested in anyone who can give an insight into the social and business life of Alnwick before and after the first World war, and the impact the war had on the town. Any Alnwick natives on board?

Sorry to ramble but all help appreciated

    Happy 2009
    Brian

          Mary, respect, many many thanks

His son, Ernest, died in 1954, I think he was born about 1891, poss in Notts, any info there please?

The fishing tackle info we have, or are accumulating; just the personal and social side we need help with.

You can check out births, marriages and deaths up to about the 1920s here:

            FreeBMD - Search

I'm supposed to be working at the moment, but I'll have a look at the censuses later if nobody else has in the meantime.

If you want to get hold of a birth, marriage or death cert, you can order them online here for £7:

                    William Henry, 5, born Aston

                      Births Sep 1888
DINGLEY Henly Thomas Newark 7b 402
DINGLEY Heuly Thomas Newark 7b 402

The person who transcribed this record evidently couldn't read the Christian name. It looks like Henly or Henby on the census.

In 1881, William's unmarried and living at 100 Baggote St., Birmingham, with his parents Thomas (carter to coal merchant) and Harriet and the following siblings:

                          Harriet?, 11
                          Ernest, 9
                          Alfred, 4
                          Violet, 2

The William Dingleys I've found in 1881, 1891 and 1901 are definitely the right person, because he's always described as a fishing reel maker. However, his birth is always shown as Coventry, Warwickshire around 1860, which fits much better with this birth than the one in West Brom:

                          Births Sep 1860
DINGLEY William Henry Coventry 6d 368

This is the website for current patents; not sure where you find historical ones:

You might do well to take out a subscription to ancestry.co.uk - there's a 14-day free trial, and you don't pay anything if you cancel before the 14 days are up.

That way you can print off the census images and do more searches.

Struggling to find archived ones from 1890's early 1900's

                                Anyone?

*Janet beat me to the main link above but the ones below refer to specific pages within the site*

                                      All images and manuscripts on the following site are copyright, many of the documents and descriptions will be a bit earlier than the dates you are interested in but the photographs might be worth a look;

                                      Alnwick - Photographs

There is a page with some old OS maps, when enlarged they do lose some clarity but comparing the 1897 to the 1920 map is an interesting exercise.

                                      Alnwick - Ordnance Maps

The paragraph at the bottom of the following page might prove interesting too, highlighting some of the "living history" projects undertaken some years ago.
