  • Surname help please

    Hello

I have recently come across the surname Pote. I am curious to know the origins of this surname as it dosent sound very english to me.

The name is from a possible ancestor named Rosa Helena Pote born in London.

Her father and mother were named William Pote and Ann Cartwright.

    Any help would be great.

            Hi,
I have had a look on the surname profile site and Pote appears to be from the very south west tip of England - is it Exeter, Plymouth area?- not sure of which county that would be.
It also says that the name is English.
herky - apologies for my lack of English geography - i will find a map and put it right!!

My OH has Potts from Hampshire/Dorset and even Cornwall and Devon and this name often translates into Pote and other different spellings. As far as I can make out it is English but have gone no further back than late 1700's.

Just imagine being asked your name and then say Pott or Potts in different ways and it will sound like Pote at some stages especially if said with a West Country accent!

I have an ancestor named Ann POAT, who was in West Sussex. There are a few POTE POATE and POAT, around that area. Ann was born about 1760, but I am not sure that POAT was her maiden name or first married name when she married Thomas Tupper, as I cannot find a baptism for Ann POTE/POAT.

Have you got William and Anne in a census to see where he was born ?
