  • Marriage at Church Door

I have some ancestors who married in 1806 at Preston Capes Northants. The transcript of the parish records note that they were married at the church door GIBBINS, James [<1806 - 1806; 1809 - 1829] refers.

I have googled to see if I can find an explanation but all the references imply that this was a middle ages practice rather than 18C. Can anyone help?

    Thanks

Briefly the most likely reason is that they were Non-Conformists or Catholic.
Until 1837 all marriages had to take place in a church or chapel of the established church (i.e. the Church of England) except for Jews & Quakers.

In order to obey the law yet salve their conscience non-conformists married at the church door.
    Cheers
