I am trying to help my wifes friend.

The info she has given me is about her mothers birth. Her niece who lives in France has given her some details, but the Volume / Page No. does not tie up.
Is there a way to look at a particular Volume / Page No. in Ancestry?

    Nieces info
    Sarah Jane Nichol
    22-10-1908
    Newcastle
    6b / 697

    My search comes up with.
    Sarah Jane Nichol
    Q4 Gateshead
    10a / 1078

I realise Newcastle and Gateshead are only divided by the river.

I know you can put in the Volume and page details in FreeBMD, but I have tried those you were given and they don't come up, so either it hasn't been transcribed yet, or the details are incorrect.

PLEASE SCAN AT 300-600 DPI FOR RESTORATION PURPOSES. THANK YOU!

You have to remember that the index starts from scratch every quarter. 10b (not 6b) is Newcastle registration district and 10a is Gateshead registration district (at that time - they do change with reorganisations).

The only Sarah Jane Nichol birth in 1908 is the one you found in Gateshead.

EDIT: 6b was Staffordshire in 1908.

Newcastle would never have been 6b. 6b is parts of Staffs for the time period you mention.

        Newcastle's district numbers are as follows: XXV (1837-51); 10b (1852-1946); 1B (1946-74).

          In Q4 1908, 6b 697 = Walsall, Staffs!

Although Newcastle -on-Tyne is only divided from Gateshead by the River Tyne, nevertheless, Gateshead is Durham whereas Newcastle is Northumberland so there is a world of difference!

Remember also that there is a Newcastle-under-Lyme in Staffordshire.

Just looked - there are no Nichols at all in 6b in 1908. So I think the Gateshead one is the most likely (assuming it ties up with other information).

I thank you all for your replies.

It looks though the niece has got some wrong info.

It is definitely Newcastle in Northumberland
