  • If anyone is really bored -

would they like to help me find Charlotte Harding nee Norman.

Charlotte was born c. 1815 in Lackford, Suffolk and married Charles Harding (sometimes Harden) in 1839. He was also from Lackford, but they ended up in Kennett, Cambridgeshire. I have them in 1861 but not before and not again until I have Charlotte as a widow in 1891.

    Any help very gratefully received.

    Jane

I've now found Charles and Charlotte in 1841 living with his father in Lackford. Still looking for 1851 etc.

1861 shows their eldest child born in Kennett in 1837ish. Was she with them at Lackford in 1841?

Just found this on Genuki's page for Kennett

              Kennett

The 1851 census for Kennett was lost at source.

I don't have the marriage certificate but suspect they married in Lackford. I don't know who her parents were. Her mother was possibly Elizabeth.

I've now found Charlotte in 1871 - already a widow.

I'm starting to think Kennett is missing from the 1851 census records.

Thank you Nell, I was right about 1851 being missing then. How annoying - I wanted to find their earlier children. I think their oldest child on the 1861 census was born c. 1847

You'll have to check the baptism registers.

Yes, you're right, I'll have to check the baptisms - sometime, don't know when!

                        Thank you for your help.

I looked on FreeBMD at Thingoe, which covered Lackford, and Newmarket which covered Kennett. For Newmarket there are a large number of Hardings but I know there were families around Dullingham which might explain them. There are 5 for Thingoe between 1837 and 1860:

                          James William Jun qtr 1840 13 469
                          Louisa Emily Mar qtr 1842 13 471
                          Herbert Charles Sep qtr 1844 13 441
                          Robert Mar qtr 1847 13 507
                          Henry Jun Qtr 1850 13 535[5]

Might give you something to start checking from

Thank you Robert. There are an awful lot of Hardings in the area. I've tied in the Thingoe ones, so I think all Charles & Charlotte's children were born in the Newmarket area.

Just found this marriage in the IGI. A bit of a coincidence isn't it. There's also a baptism for a Charlotte at Lackford in 1814, parents William & Elizabeth.

                                Moggie,

How very peculiar. Although Harding is a very common name, it is strange that these names match up exactly. However, I'm sure the marriage in 1839 in the Thingoe district is theirs because they were already together on the 1841 census (living with his parents in Lackford).

Thank you for Charlotte's baptism - I don't know how I missed it.

                                  Hi Jane
The 1841 census does not give relationships to head of household or to other family members so Charlotte could have been a sister to Charles and not his wife.

I know this is a possibility Moggie, and I won't know for sure until I see the marriage record. However, I have found a Charles and Charlotte Harding in Dorset on the census so it looks like it is purely a coincidence of names.

                                    Thank you for your help.
