  • Help please with 1841 Scotland Census

Researching Niel McAra and in 1841 census I find him under this census ref.
Parish:Muthill; ED:11; Page 1: Line 700 Roll; CSSCT1841..55-0469 There are about 22 names at the address. My problem is............is this the whole village or just one household. I'm normally used to seeing ag labs, miners and carters not a surgeon!
From an IGI birth record, Neil McAra/Mary Fell are parents to a son John on 10/11/1821 in Muthill. I havent been able to find a marriage (if there was one) of them.
I would appreciate any help or advice.

I think it means all those living in Braco village, difficult to know without the image.
If you know where you are looking then a few credits on Scotlands people to view the image would be a good idea.

Old Parish Records are excellent on there as they give good info.

There are some M'Ara's (note M' not Mc) listed here in 1832 Muthill Electoral Roll.

ps I have added this link to Perthshire on the WIKI

Unless one of the occupants is clearly a laird and everyone else servants, I would guess this is probably just part of the village. It was very common in the English censuses to just give the name of the village as an address for everyone.

Of course without the images you can't tell how the households were divided.

      Statistical Accounts of Scotland

might tell you what the population of Muthill was in 1841.

Their marriage is on the Scotlandspeople.gov.uk. In the OPR's Neil McAra married Mary Fell 19th June 1820.
