  • Uncle/royal navy or merchant?

Hello All, i am trying to find some information about my late uncle, William Griffin, who died about 1944 in Manchester aged about 26. My father told me he spent the war on the Russian convoys taking supplies, but i dont know if he was with the Royal Navy or the Merchant navy, anyone able to advise how i go about finding out?
    Thanks,
    Bill.

Hi Griff, if you look up the arctic convoys of ww2 on wikipedia it will give you a fair bit of information. Also, your uncle was almost certainly a merchant navy man, these men did a fantastic job and were very much ignored in official histories over here.

OH's father was on Atlantic convoys. He was a RN radio operator on civilian ships.
