  • William Henry Cox born 1900

    Hello all

Can somebody please help me with their expert advice and searching skills?

My GG Grandad William Henry Cox was born in Wolverhampton in 1900 and his father was also called William Henry Cox.
On the 1911 census William Snr was a labourer at a brewery.
On the 1911 census William snr has a new wife which he married in 1908.
Can somebody please check the 1901 census for me please and see if they can see my family and find out who the first wife was please?

    Many thanks Danny

That looks to be the right family.

If theres a death for a Harriet between 1901-1908 then id say it was correct.

No, ive just checked the 1911 census and that family are still all living together and Harriett is still alive.

I have my William Henry Cox and father on 1911 census so not the right family.

The unlucky thing is that William i believe is the oldest one which is a wee bit of a pain.

He did have one sister that was by his mother before she died and her name was Gladys May Cox which might help identify the mother (If she was in some way named after her)

Ahhh, the bottom one looks to be the best bet but with the son being named Walter im not to sure.

As my William was a labourer at a brewery it looks good.

Id get the birth cert to check mothers name but i cant find his birth.

Also what makes me lean towards the bottom one is because William jnr had a daughter named Edith GERTRUDE Cox.

I just had a look on the 1911 census and there is no Walter Cox with the family William and Gertrude or any other mother so im guessing that the 1901 census Walter must have been mistranscribed.

There was one Walter but parents were John and Lucy.

I looked and its very clearly a Walter

                            Have found the following births

                            Walter William Cox - Sept 1898 6b 695

                            William Cox - Dec 1899 6b 574
                            William James Cox - Mar 1899 6b 552
                            William Cox - Mar 1899 6b 605

a Walter Cox died in 1908 in Wolverhampton but was aged 1 so not the same one.

If you are 100% certain you can identify the 1908 marriage, then that would be the best cert to get as it would give you details of William senr's father, which hopefully would help you to find him as a child and work forward from there.

Another option would be to get Gladys May's birth cert, but there are two to choose from after 1901 and they are close together. Your best bet for that would be to ask Wolverhampton Reg office to send you which ever one has the right father (hoping they don't both have a dad with the same name!) Wolverhampton are very helpful

                                Thankyou JBee and Merry

I will take your advice and purchase Gladys May's birth cert to see who the mother is.
