  • Death Cert Info

I'm thinking of applying for a copy of an ancestor's death cert. He died in 1878 and there is a rumour in the family that he committed suicide. Does anyone know whether this would be recorded as the cause of death if it were true?

If that is what the inquest determined, yes.

Thanks I wasn't sure as to the level of detail at that time. I'll probably apply for the cert and see if we can clear up a family mystery!

It should say the cause of death and whether it was self-inflicted or not. My gt x 3 grandfather's death cert from 1884 states cause of death as

        "
Committed suicide by cutting his throat with a razor - lived 20 days"

Scottish suicides are often recorded as an entry in the Register of Corrected Entries (RCE) after the Procurator Fiscal has held his enquiry.

If there was an inquest, you an then apply to the library reference section in the area the death happened. I have done this by e mail and they have found a newspaper report of the incident and the inquest and posted to me. In one case for free, the other for a minimal admin charge.

Fills out more detail. Good luck with it.
