  • A Soldier

A new contact has sent me this image.

Unfortunately, he does not know the time period, regiment etc.

    Please can you help

not really much to go on but enough to say that he was a bandsman. Although he had collar dogs showing the picture is not that too clear to see which regiment it is that he served with. As for period I feel that it could be anytime between 1900 and the first world war (although this is more of a suggestion than a firm date).

That's great, thanks Don. I know it's difficult because the clarity just isn't there

          Thanks for the suggestion

I am already a member of GWF and have benefited from their expert advice in the past, although I was wary of posting this on there because I know the moderators will remove any non-WW1 enquires.

However, being that it's possibly of that period, I'll give it a go, thank you

My husband also says bandsman but puts it roughly 1880s-1890s.

Hope you don't mind I downloaded your image and attempted to restore it, crop and zoom in managed to do a little, but afraid it was no help the image has to much grain in it to establish anything from the buttons or lappel but I do agree that I think he may be a bandman or possible calvery or an officer he does look very distinguished. As Penelope's HO said around 1880's. Sorry could no be anymore help

Sorry Rob, I wasn't ignoring you, just hadn't spotted your reply :o

I did put this on GWF and got his reply -
It appears to be a pre-1914, 7 button full dress tunic with white facings, indicating a non Royal (associated), English, or Welsh Line infantry regiment. He is wearing bandsman's 'wings' on his shoulders so he is indeed a bandsman. His collar badges are indistinct but his unit title is embroidered in white on his shoulder strap and a magnifier should reveal what they say if the photo was developed on a glass plate, as the resolution is usually very good. The dates you were quoted are correct.

Although I think that's as far we're going to go with this one.
