  • Can anyone find them in the 1851 census?

Sarah Jane Purkis (nee Primmer) born c. 1811 Portsea Hampshire widow
    Sarah Ann Purkis chr. 1834
    Ann Maria Purkis chr. 1836

I have them on the 1841 census (found on FMP)
    HO107; piece 413; book/folio 4/31; page 34 Portsea North Road

and also on the 1861 census
    - Ancestry.co.uk

The two daughters married. Can anyone find what happened to mother Sarah Jane after 1861. When did she die?

The husband/father William Purkis died in 1838 (before the birth of his last child Caroline, who died an infant).

Is this her Sarah Puntis 40 born Portsea
a lodger and dressmaker - though it says she's unmarried

with a lady Mary Mosley 77 a widow

Might be this one - a widow on her own age 49 can't read occupation.

There's a death of a Sarah Jane Purkis at S.Stoneham 2c 36 Dec 1873 which would tie in with an 1811 birth.

          or this in 1871 census.

            JBee, yes it's her!

Val (I wish I hadn't started) has pmed me and I have now found them on quite a few censuses.

Sarah A was widowed and re-married to Charles Bastable.
Ann Maria married James Rofe, and produced a son (James). She was widowed, but re-married to William Mann.

            Many thanks!

Knightroots has Anna Maria's wedding December 31 1856 to John LEONARD, but I can't see anything else obviously-relevant.

Val, JBee and Christine - many thanks, I think I have almost sorted them out!

                  Ann Maria Purkis
                  christened 6 July 1836 St Mary's Portsea

                  married:

                  1. John Leonard Dec 1856, who died Sep 1860 Portsea
                  2. James Rofe Jun 1861 Portsea, can't find death
                  3. Thomas Harper Dec 1873 Southampton (I'm pretty sure it's her - it says "Ann Maria Rope" and on the original but I bet someone couldn't read their handwriting!) Thomas died Dec 1879 Portsea
                  4. William Bastable Dec 1885

She was with William on the 1891 cenus and then on the 1901 census she is with her son James C Rofe (as mother-in-law!) in Newhaven Sussex.

Phew! She led me a merry dance!

Her sister Sarah Ann Purkis was christened 17 Aug 1834 St Mary's Portsea.

                  Married
                  1. Charles Bushell Jan 1854 Charles died Sep 1861
                  2. Charles Bastable Jun 1866

Thank goodness they stayed together! They lived in Botley.

Now, were Charles Bastable and Ann Maria's husband William Bastable brothers/related? My next task for today, but off to do Christmas shopping first.:D
