  • How much??

    Would anyone know?

What is the equivalent in todays money of £150 which was left in a will in 1848?

Was it considered a lot of money back then??

In 1848, a live in maid got £10 a year (plus her keep). An ag lab got about 15shillings a week, depending on the weather, lol, so £150 would have been a nice little sum for anyone other than the really rich.

        The Suspicions of Mr Whicher

In 1860, £1 had the purchasing power of £65

A shilling had the purchasing power of about £3.25 today

A penny had the purchasing power of twenty five pence today.

An income of £100 in 1860 in the equivalen of about £60,000 today.

The above is taken from The Suspicions of Mr Whicher, a true story in fiction. They were in turn taken from two American economists.
