  • Who did Sedonia Turner marry?

I have found a marriage registration for a Sedonia Turner in Dudley in 1858, but there is no husband's name (no other men registered as marrying in Dudley at the same time). It's September quarter 1858, volume 2c, page 15. I had a similar query a while back and someone helped me find the husband's name in that case, but I can't remember how... Can anyone help here, please?

I want her to have married Benjamin Lowe, by the way

    TIA,
    Zoe

The easiest way in this case is to go onto the local BMD site for that area, since I happen to know there is one for Dudley! One good thing about those sites is that they tell you for sure who the spouse was so there is none of this getting a list and trying to match the pairs up.

Have checked the complete images on Ancestry and the reference is quite clear Dudley 2c, 15

However I think , the references for Dudley should be 6c

Found these on free BMD for the same quarter

        Marriages Sep 1858
        Harkins Alfred
        Haskins Alfred
        Stokes Louisa
        York Benjamin
        Dudley 6c 15

        Marriages Dec 1858
        Brettle William
        CAPEWELL william
        Hughes Emma
        Taylor Selina
        Dudley 6c 15

There is one female missing in the first lot - so she may have married Alfred Harkins/Haskins or Benjamin York.
Will try to find them both in the 1861 census

Ah - I see Kate got there first!

Thanks, Elaine... I've already had some help with this family - thanks to some members here, I managed to find them in the 1861 census, mistranscribed as Benjaman and Salina Low. After spending hours trying to work out what her name actually was, I've decided it was probably Sedonia, which, apparently, is a real name. My problem is that I can't find them before 1861. This is what I have:

Annie Elizabeth Lowe born 1844, Brierly Hill, Staffs (married John Adams)
Father (from 1881 census when he is living with them): Benjamin Lowe, born 1811, Brockmoor, Staffs

1861: "Benjaman" and "Salina" living in Kingswinford, Staffs
1871: Benjamin and "Hedonia" living in Bilston, Staffs
1881: Sedonia dead, Benjamin living with Annie and John

I can't find a marriage of a Sedonia to a Benjamin Lowe either. I'm considering ordering a birth certificate for an Annie Lowe born in 1844, but I'm really not sure whether she's my Annie Elizabeth, could be a total waste of money...

Edited to add: The marriage certificate of Annie and John won't help, because I'm sure of her father's identity, it's her mother and any siblings I want to confirm/find.

This is a bit of a long shot but might be worth looking at.

                  1851 census
                  HO107; Piece: 2036; Folio: 458; Page: 42
                  Family members:
                  Benjamin Bourne 39
                  Selvery Bourne 38
Ann E Bourne 6 born Brierley Hill
                  Caroline Pearson 18 - servant
                  Joseph Pearson 78 - wife's father

The surname isn't clear - not sure it is Bourne - although it doesn't look like Lowe
Occupation for Benjamin - forgeman (same as your Benjamin Lowe 1861 occ)

Cannot seem to get much further with that family when I try to trace the Pearson line.

I think the 1851 census is unlikely since Selvery is quite clearly written, and I can't imagine anyone confusing Sedonia (or even Salina or Hedonia) with Selvery. Also, to me it looks like Ann B, not Ann E. As it happens, there are Pearsons elsewhere in my family tree, but on my father's line whereas this is my mother's line... no connection, I think. Not sure about the birth for Salina. I suppose it could be a mistranscription of Sedonia, which I really do think was her name from the census images I've found.

I said it was a long shot!

Have you tried pairing these off to see if Sidonia Pearson was widowed by 1851?

Thanks, Pam - I was just pairing them off but you were quicker!

Surprisingly, there seem to be several Sedonia's around in this area at the right time, but none as yet who appear to have been of the right age and available to marry Benjamin Lowe before the 1861 census.

I can't find Sedonia Bentley, but then Sedonia seems to be mistranscribed more often than not.

I think I'm about to break the wall - again, thanks to help received here...

                                Look what I've just found:

LOWBORNE, Sidonia died aged 66 in Stourbridge 6c 146

The long shot was, most probably, correct!

No idea! And I still don't know whether Sidonia is the mother of my Annie Elizabeth, since her first marriage was in 1844 so she would have had to moved quickly to marry again in time to be her mother. And of course, there may have been two Sidonia Pearsons in the first place...

                                        And to confirm it:

Benjamin Lowe Bourne, died March quarter 1887, Stourbridge district, born about 1812.

So it looks like he discarded his second last name between 1851 and 1861, but kept it for official uses... I wonder why :D
