Val & George and I, are trying to identify the parents of William Samain/Semain born in Gosport in 1800 (place & date from subsequent census data). We have been spectacularly unsuccessful in tracing his birth/baptism, but there is a high probability that his father was the James who served in the 2nd Foot Guards (Coldstream) from 17.10.1799 to 25.12.1806. The Guards embarked for their Egyptian Campaign in 1801.
My question (at last) is this: at which port in England did the Army embark for Egypt? Portsmouth would add some very significant weight to the balance of probabilities that James was William’s father. But...
I would be really grateful if someone could point me in the right direction.
Thank you, Henry
