        1841 census:

Margaret Thorp, washerwoman, aged 40, born in Ireland, is living in Garden St., Manchester, with Andrew Thorpe 10, Fanny Thorpe 8, and Jonathan Thorpe, 2 months, all born in Lancashire.

The census was taken on 6th June 1841, so Jonathan would have been born around the beginning of April, and his father Peter died in the April-June quarter of 1841.

Unfortunately, 1829 Manchester Cathedral marriages aren't on the LancsBMD site yet.

Do you have details of the marriage in 1829? Were the witnesses members of either family?

I can't see Margaret and children after 1841 - do you know what happened to them?

The death certificate will give you Peter's age (as known to the informant).

You can order it online from the GRO for £7 here:

Registration Services - Certificate Ordering Service

It will only tell you his occupation, address, place, date and cause of death, and informant's name (unlike a Scottish cert).

The marriage entry should give the ages of both parties and the witnesses's names. Not sure if the parents' names would have been given in 1829. We have one or two members from Manchester who may be able to do a look-up for you; alternatively, you should be able to e-mail the local Records Office to ask for details.

                      1881:

In 1881 there are two Jonathan Thorpes, same age both married to Ellen and living in Manchester! One couple is the people whose marriage I posted in the last post as they have Benson's living with them. The other couple.........isn't! lol

I don't know which is the right Jonathan. It's odd as the "other" Jonathan hasn't appeared until now. Could be one man with a double life! lol

                        RG12; Piece: 3187; Folio 57; Page 16;

I think the couple without children are the more likely to be the right ones (as Jonathan's age is sticking to 1841 better). That would mean the marriage I posted before is wrong.

Here is another marriage to Ellen Bywater:

                        Name: Jonathan Thorpe
                        Year of Registration: 1866
                        Quarter of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec
                        District: Manchester (1837-1924)
                        County: Lancashire

I have gone back and found the other Jonathan on earlier censuses now. He was just out of the age range I was looking at.

Merry's quoted the census references from Ancestry.

It looks like by 1901 he had remarried to Amelia Freeman:

I was hoping there might be an uncle or in-law with Margaret and family, to give us a lead to where Peter was born, but no such luck so far.

On GR I used to use my real name (which ends in Montgomery).

At work I would get called Monty for obvious reasons (which I actually hated!).

When I changed my board name on GR I was going to be Monty Montgomery, but added the Merry because I am most of the time! lol
