  • HMS Kangaroo accident

    Hello

Ive just found out that a rellie had an accident on the HMS Kangaroo and died.

His name was Thomas Henry Hutfield and he was from Portsmouth.

He was on the 1901 census and he and his wife had a son in 1908.
I also know that the wife had her last daughter in 1919 which i assume was his.

Now the HMS Kangaroo was scrapped in 1920 according to Wikipedia.

So does anyone know where i might find out about this accident?

He was buried in the local Naval cemetery in Portsmouth.

          Hi Jackie

Im afraid not, a contact told me she had photos of his funeral.

He must have died before 1920 i would think as the HMS Kangaroo was scrapped in 1920.

That's what I'm confused about because the only death for a Thomas Hutfeld (apart from a 2 year old in 1907) is 1911 (Thomas H Hutfield aged 37). That would tie in with the birth of Thomas Henry Hutfield in 1876 in Winchester.

I checked the actual images as well for 1918 to 1921 in case they hadn't been transcribed.

Is the 1876 birth your man?

Yep that sounds like my man, the age looks spot on.

Perhaps he was only the father of the first lot of kids and the 3 after 1911 were another man.

Im gonna look for another marriage for Harriett Hutfield after 1911.
Actually thinking about it, her maiden name showed up Mitchell and if she remarried it would surly be Hutfield.

Or they were someone else's children - although there is only one Hutfield / Mitchell marriage. Perhaps she wasn't exactly truthful with the registrar

I was going to look in the newspaper archives for an HMS Kangaroo accident but my library site is down at the moment

Right i found a marriage for my Harriett Ellen Hutfield in 1919, the same year she had a child with the name Hutfield.

                  CONFUSED lol

Just to let you know that when they ask for 'maiden name' that is often what the person gives them even though they may have been married before. I found this on my Nan's marriage cert for her second marriage - she put her maiden name and not her previous married name. Makes sense if you think about it, as a maiden name is just that. The name she was born with.

There are naval papers available for download (3-50) on the documentsonline website for a Thomas Henry Hutfield, born 1872 Otterbourne, Southampton. Seems a possibility. Don't forget he might have lied about his age to get into the Navy! It should give a record of the ships he served on and dates.
